What I do at Virtual:
I provide strategic counsel to professional societies and associations with a focus on membership growth, enhancing member value, and developing non-dues revenue streams.
Years of experience:
25+ years of work in association management
- CEO of the National Investor Relations Institute
- CEO of the National Court Reporters Association
- CFA Institute
Education: Bachelor of Arts from James Madison University and hold the Certified Association Executive credential.
Favorite client story:
I engineered a global initiative to rename what was the “Association for Investment Management and Research.” After securing requisite support and approval from stakeholders around the world, I was given a single month to develop, launch, and promote a new brand in time for the organization’s annual meeting. What seemed impossible became the most exhilarating month of my career, leading to the introduction of what would become a world-class brand: “CFA Institute.”
Were it not for the fame part, I would be good candidate for “Hot Ones” based on my tolerance for spicy food.
What I do for fun: Hiking, cooking, and photography since, with three kids now grown, I no longer spend 80% of my free time at swim meets.
I can’t live without:
Lily, my yellow Labrador
Important life lesson:
“Seek first to understand, then to be understood,” which is harder than it seems.
Key to success:
Humility, a sense of humor, and a willingness to ask tough questions
Pro bono marketing support of local farmer’s market
Dozens of volunteer roles for community swim teams
Retired Little League baseball coach
Favorite Movie, Book, Food, Music:
Movie: Raising Arizona
Book: Anything by Malcolm Gladwell or Michael Lewis
Food: Sausage Cacciatore
Music: No longer embarrassed to that my radio defaults to “70s on 7”
