What is the Mojaloop Foundation?
MF: The mission of the Mojaloop Foundation is to increase financial inclusion by empowering organizations creating interoperable payments systems to enable digital financial services for all.
What makes the Mojaloop Foundation unique?
MF: The Mojaloop Foundation’s open source community, convenings and educational events continue showcasing the unique collaboration environment created by the Mojaloop project. Through these activities, the organization aims to help more organizations understand how Mojaloop can be used as a blueprint for payment models that expand access to inclusive digital financial services.
Who are your members?
MF: Sponsor-level members include Coil, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google, MAS, ModusBox, Ripple and The Rockefeller Foundation. To achieve its mission, Mojaloop Foundation operates as a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization, maintaining its free, open source software, Mojaloop, and community as public goods in the service of financial inclusion. Merchants, banks, providers, government offices and other entities looking to build inclusive payments platforms can use Mojaloop – whole, adapted or as a real-time payments reference model. Can you tell us about your recent in person event in Tanzania?
MF: The Mojaloop Foundation held its first post COVID hybrid event this past April in Arusha, Tanzania. The event consisted of 160+ online attendees and 80+ in person attendees spanning across 45 countries and 6 different continents. What’s in store for Mojaloop in 2022?
MF: The Mojaloop Foundation reached some major milestones in 2022, such as celebrating the foundation’s second anniversary, hosting the first post-COVID hybrid event in Tanzania, and launching the Mojaloop Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Center of Excellence (COE) in Singapore to expand on the mission to advance financial inclusion in emerging markets. Under the leadership and guidance of newly appointed Director of the Mojaloop CBDC COE Nick Drury will oversee the operations and strategic growth of the COEand its initiatives, such as hackathons, workshops, and pilot projects. What is Mojaloop Foundation
Mojaloop was designed to provide a reference model for payment interoperability, that can be used to overcome barriers that have slowed the spread of digital financial services. Whole, adapted, or as a blueprint – the Mojaloop Foundation’s open source software can be used by organizations to build interoperable, digital payment systems that enable seamless, affordable financial services between individual users, banks, government entities, merchants, mobile network operators, providers, and technology companies – connecting the underserved with the emerging digital economy.
