Q&A with Ronald Phan, Program Specialist, Client Services

Since March, we have been working from home (WFH) because of the pandemic. What makes you happy to come to work each day and what is your motivation to get through the tough days?

RP: Having a forward-thinking, supportive company that realizes employees are their greatest asset. I love that I have a great degree of control and freedom within my work. For those tough days, Virtual offers schedule flexibility to minimize any work-related stress which creates a positive work environment for employees.

What is next on your bucket list?

RP: I am currently a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am working towards earning my purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This can take about three years to complete but this is where you begin to develop your own style in the artform.

What company value most resonates with you and how do you incorporate into your day-to-day activities?

RP: Service Excellence! I enjoy getting to collaborate with my teams and interact with our members each day to provide them with the best customer service experience. I like to ensure that our clients and members receive the best customer service I can offer.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

RP: I find that getting our members to renew can be challenging. I often have to remind them of the benefits of being a member in their organization can open so many doors of opportunities for them. This keeps my on my toes because member benefits are always changing because organizations are always adding new things.

What has been your favorite project, and why? What do you find most rewarding about your job?

RP: I really enjoyed working with Courtney Eiland on the new Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) Membership & Marketing Campaign. We were both new to the client at the time and this was as a great opportunity to collaborate and make our mark on the world.

What’s the coolest part about working with the clients we have?

RP: Helping them achieve their goals and make a mark on the world!

What advice would you give someone hoping to pursue a career at Virtual?

RP: You will love it here at Virtual! Everyone is always willing to lend a hand where you need it.

What do you love about living in Virginia?

RP: Up through the pandemic, I lived in Alexandria, Virginia. However, I have had the opportunity to relocate to Oklahoma which is in the center of the United States. Downtown Tulsa has great Art Deco Architecture that is super unique! I love that there is so much to do in Tulsa and that I am closer to my family down in Houston, Texas but will miss Virginia and my colleagues there.

Who/What inspires you?

RP: I am really driven by results. I like it when I have a concrete set of goals to meet and enough time to figure out strong strategies for accomplishing them. Virtual does a great job of being transparent with our yearly goals and working with the leadership team to figure out quarterly strategies to meet the year-end numbers.
